Q1. What is the current distribution of COVID-19 in the United States? Which area is more serious?

COVID-19 is found in all 50 states.  There have been deaths in all 50 states.  By far the hardest-hit area is the New York and New Jersey area.  New York has 214,000+ cases and New Jersey has 71,000+ cases. Massachusetts, where I live, has the 3rd highest number of cases, nearly 30,000.

Q2. What has the government done to deal with covide-19? What do the public know about COVID 19?

The President has issued orders to prevent the hoarding of medical resources and allocating medical resources to respond to COVID-19.  The Congress has passed 3 bills to aidecitizens and businesses who have lost jobs and income, and has allocated money to the States and for public health to be used for treating the ill. The Governors of many states have issued stay-at-home orders, have obtained additional protective equipment for doctors and nurses, and have set up emergency medical facilities in various places, like convention centers.

COVID-19 is in the news all the time.  Many people know quite a lot about the disease itself and about the government’s response. It depends, however, on what news station they listen to; some stations try to make it seem that the disease is not a big problem or that closing businesses is a bigger problem than peoples’ illnesses and deaths.

Q3. How does COVID affect the lives of local residents?

Most people have been staying at home.  Those who can are working from home viacomputer, many others have lost their jobs, schools are closed. Children are sent their lessons from their schools by computer.  Many stores are closed or open for only limited hours. Grocery stores only allow a limited number of people in at one time.  There are shortages of some items.  Regular medical care has been suspended partly to stop the spread of the disease and partly to free medical personnel to care for COVID-19 patients. My sister, who is a nurse, has changed from her regular job to working in a COVID-19 unit.

Q4. How long do you think the outbreak in the United States will continue?

I don’t know.  At least 2 more months, but I suspect it will return, possibly several times.

Q5. Are people willing to accept quarantine in the United States? Are there many people walking in the street?

The majority have accepted what is called “stay-at-home orders.”  Some have not and have insisted on going to the beach or to church; some have been arrested for this.  Many people are taking walks because they are at home so much more.  Usually we do not wear masks just to walk, but do make sure to avoid each other by 6 feet.  Many people walking are more friendly than before.
